Each month for The Hard Copy Supplies Journal, we scour office supplies superstores and certain big-box retail stores to check out their deals and point-of-purchase displays for inkjet and toner supplies. For the May and June issues of the Journal, we visited office superstores Office Depot, OfficeMax, and Staples, and big-box retailer Best Buy.
Office Depot
It has been three years since Canon introduced its CLI-8 ink tanks, but only a very limited number of third-party products have been available for these Canon SKUs due to the complex chipsets the tanks employ. Now, Office Depot is selling refilled sets of cyan, magenta, and yellow CLI-8 tanks in a three-pack for $35.99. The office superstore did not have the compatible black ink tanks, but the manager of the store we visited said they would be available soon, though he did not know what the pricing would be. The price of the Office Depot three-pack offers consumers a discount of $2 on each tank. The individual OEM tanks sell for $13.99 each. However, we noted that Office Depot sells a Canon four-pack of CLI-8 tanks, which includes a dye-based black tank along with CMY tanks, for $47.99. At that price, the individual cartridges in the OEM’s four-pack are identical in price to the Office Depot-branded tanks, at slightly less than $12 apiece.
