Dear:
Small local businesses are clashing with large manufacturers in the printer industry in a battle that affects both consumers and businesses. The remanufacturing industry accounts for roughly $2.8 billion in sales in the highly competitive imaging supplies marketplace. Remanufacturers collect cartridges from the consumer and repair worn parts, replace used toner and resell the cartridges at approximately one-half the price of a new cartridge. This industry has been so successful that the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are fighting with the remanufacturers for market share.
Certain OEMs are threatening to eliminate consumer choice when purchasing replacement supplies. Increasingly, equipment manufacturers are using anticompetitive devices, including technology such as "killer chips" that eliminate the consumers’ ability to choose.
Remanufacturing is a labor-intensive process, and cartridge remanufacturers are generally small, local businesses. Remanufacturers provide an excellent product that competes with the large manufacturers and affords the consumer a high-quality, lower cost option to expensive new cartridges, and also offers an excellent environmental alternative.
The conflict has been the subject of articles in The Wall Street Journal, Newsday, USA Today and other regional media, and could make for a good article for (media name), especially since several local companies have joined the fight.
I am attaching a list of frequently asked questions that will provide some basic information on the remanufacturing industry, as well as some more detailed information on current litigation. If you have any questions, please call me.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
