Paper Mate Teams With Legacy To Enter Inkjet Market

December 16, 2004

Penmaker Paper Mate has licensed Legacy Manufacturing to produce a line of inkjet cartridges in an agreement between a recognizable brand name and a leading aftermarket inkjet manufacturer.

Paper Mate, makers of FlexGrip pens and other writing instruments for more than 50 years, will begin shipping its own Paper Mate-brand inkjet printer cartridges next month. Paper Mate inkjet cartridges will be sold primarily in North America at consumer electronics stores, office product stores, mass merchandisers and drug and grocery stores. The inkjets are compatible with the most popular HP, Epson and Canon printers.

“We are very excited and this is something that helps the entire industry,” Legacy’s President Charles Duke said. “The Paper Mate name brings the kind of credence that the aftermarket has been developing for years and this takes it to the next level.”

Legacy was selected by Paper Mate because of its ability to design and manufacture high-quality cartridges using the specially formulated AccuSharp inks.

“The focus was to have a visible difference in print so what we have is black inks that are darker and sharper than the originals and color inks that give a more vibrant print than other colors,” said Ben Lyles, Legacy’s technical director who oversaw the specifications, formulation and testing of the AccuSharp inks. “We worked hard on improving the stability of the formulas, especially the color inks so there wasn’t print-head degradation over time, and reducing inter-color bleed with black and other colors. We were able to come up with a technology that was completely unique and exclusive to the product. It’s completely different technology than even the OEMs use.”

The national rollout of Paper Mate inkjets will start with a kickoff at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Jan. 6-9.

“We know this will shake up the inkjet market,” said Rory Leyden, president of Sanford, makers of Paper Mate products. “We’re pleased that Legacy is moving forward aggressively with this launch because consumers want a reasonably priced and reliable alternative to expensive inkjet cartridges. That’s exactly what they will get from Paper Mate cartridges. Specifically, Paper Mate cartridges meet the four criteria that business and home users say they need: a brand name they can trust, excellent color quality, dependable performance and a reasonable price.”
